Financial Literacy Resources

What is Financial Literacy and why is it important?

The term financial literacy refers to the knowledge, skills, confidence and motivation it takes for people to keep track of their finances, make ends meet, plan ahead, keep informed and choose products and services that work for them. Financial Literacy resources and workshops can …

  • help families to navigate transitions and major life events (e.g., having a child, going to school, divorce etc.)
  • help newcomers settle
  • improve social inclusion
  • boost housing stability
  • reduce stress and increase self-sufficiency
  • improve access to benefits (government program and eligibility awareness, documentation processing help)
  • provide alternatives to predatory ‘pay day loan’ type services

In 2013, FRP Canada was awarded a TD Financial Literacy Grant Fund to develop a list of financial literacy resources and tools for the whole family. The links on this website have been vetted to ensure that the information is relevant and sound for families with modest incomes and otherwise.

Target Audience
Resources have been categorized under specific target populations. Click the category of interest to see those resources. City specific (local) organizations are listed only if they also include downloadable resources or online tools and calculators useful to all.

Some topics addressed include creating saving and spending plans, understanding credit and credit repair, banking in Canada, protecting your personal information, talking about finances with your children, and accessing financial literacy workshops.

For each website, we have indicated what type of information you will find there - online tools/calculators, downloadable resources to print, national or local workshops, learning modules for facilitating workshops, as well as general financial literacy information including links to resources.

We strive to keep these links up-to-date, but appreciate hearing about any links that do not work.  Please send an email to info@frp.ca
